The best conversations aren't always comfortable - but they can be the most valuable.
Strong student communities are built on respectful dialogue. Whether you're contributing in class, working on group assignments, taking on leadership roles or participating in student representation, learning how to navigate difficult conversations is a skill that will benefit you throughout university and beyond.
This interactive workshop will help you build the confidence to have respectful, productive conversations—even when opinions differ. Rather than avoiding disagreement or trying to "win" an argument, you'll explore practical strategies for staying curious, asking better questions and responding in ways that keep conversations moving forward.
What you'll learn
You'll develop practical skills to:
- Stay curious when someone has a very different opinion to your own
- Disagree in ways that strengthen relationships rather than damage them
- Ask questions that encourage understanding rather than defensiveness
- Recognise what's influencing your own reactions before responding
- Keep conversations constructive, even when emotions are running high.

Each year, Student Voice Australasia (SVA) hosts a Student Summit and Symposium, bringing together students and staff from across the sector to explore emerging issues, share innovative practice and celebrate student partnership.
Griffith encourages students to participate in these events and makes available a small number of travel grants and registration subsidies to support Griffith students to attend in person or online.
