By taking part in the Student Academy of Excellence, you can gain academic knowledge as well as in-demand skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, a global perspective and research and industry experience, which will help you stand out upon graduation.
The Student Academy of Excellence produces highly sought-after graduates with the specialist knowledge and broad management competencies to become the CEOs, researchers, educators, creators and community leaders.
Answer
Yes. However, this will vary from student to student, but you will need to allow 10 to 15 hours per trimester. You will be required to attend some activities to remain in the Academy. These activities include:
- exclusive orientation activities
- mentoring program (at least one meeting per trimester)
- Student Academy of Excellence Symposium (one day per year)
- leadership development activities (at least one per trimester)
All other activities are optional.

To be considered for selection as an international student, you must:
- demonstrate academic and personal achievement
- be made an offer to study at Griffith University
- complete, sign and submit a Student Academy of Excellence application form.

The Student Academy of Excellence does not have a membership fee and participation costs for full cohort events are sponsored by the Student Academy of Excellence. Please note that some optional activities may incur incidental costs, such as travel to and from external venues.
Students participating in international experiences can apply for funding assistance through the Funding webpage or the Student Academy of Excellence webpage. Please note that their should expect to provide their own funds for general expenses such as in-country food and transportation.
Explanation
The Student Academy of Excellence is an extra-curricular program that provides students with experiences and skills that complement their undergraduate degree. Many of these experiences will be exclusive to Student Academy of Excellence students and foster skills in high demand by employers, including:
- leadership
- communication and teamwork
- a global perspective
- research and industry skills.
The Student Academy of Excellence is unique to Griffith University and accepted its first intake in 2008.Â

The Student Academy of Excellence experience will give you the skills and experiences for you to reach your full potential and make you stand out from the crowd when you graduate. You will:
- take part in regular one-on-one sessions with a mentor to give you guidance and help steer you towards your career goals
- collaborate with leading researchers, academics and other high achieving students across a number of disciplines
- be encouraged to gain a global perspective by studying, volunteering or working overseas for a few weeks, a few months or a year
- be recognised as high achieving amongst the university community.
