How to become a first aid officer

First aid officer (FAO) requirements and training
To be a first aid officer, you must:
- hold the following nationally recognised qualifications:
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid (valid for 3 years)
- HLTAID006 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (renew every 12 months)
- seek approval via the FAO nomination form before booking training.
Suggested training provider details are below (staff may seek their own provider, as long as they provide the above mentioned courses)

Funding information
- costs are reimbursed after training via Concur-Â acquittal process using the Finance System Concur
- staff must provide a receipt from the training provider when claiming reimbursement.
Role and responsibilities
FAOs are required to:
- provide appropriate first aid care to any ill or injured person in the workplace where and when required
- undertake a monthly checklist to ensure the first aid room (if applicable), first aid kit(s), and any AED equipment within the workplace are maintained to the required standard and ready for use
- record the details of any first aid treatment provided to a person
- be a member of the local emergency control organisation (ECO) and provide first aid care in the event of a building evacuation or other emergency should it occur
- FAOs are required to add their positions as FAO to the phonebook
- ensure their first aid and CPR qualification remain current.

 It is the student's responsibility to meet the costs of an accredited First Aid/ CPR course if this is a requirement to be Fit for Professional Practice. Nationally-accredited providers offer First Aid/ CPR training and assessment to standards established by the Industry Skills Council and Australian Department of Education, Science and Training and some of these include:
